Through the Gallerists's Eye: Photographic Innovation

Through the Gallerists's Eye: Photographic Innovation

$120.00

Since 1981, gallery owner Mary Ryan has shepherded scores of contemporary artists to career heights with a keen eye toward originality and process. In 2013, Mary merged her star roster of artists and artist's estates at Mary Ryan Gallery with partner Jeffrey Lee to form the RyanLee Gallery in Chelsea

  • First Up:  Mary invites us to RyanLee to meet veteran photographer and filmmaker Sandy Skoglund.  Skoglund, a pioneer of tableaux, or directorial, photography, has for decades employed an arsenal of artificial enhancements that painstakingly fuse installation, sculpture, and a cornucopia of props into visual narratives that intentionally - often humorously - trigger discomfort and reflection.  Join us as we discuss with both gallerist and artist, the varied influences -- from Dali to pop-culture horror films -- that abound in Skoglund's constructed scenarios.

  • Next Stop:  Mary will escort us to the magical world of another master of technological innovation.  Hidden away in the West Village brownstone studio of Clifford Ross, we'll find state-of-the-art photographic systems that have resulted in cutting edge images and installations such as Ross's 2017 Light/Waves, installed along the exterior of Southampton's Parrish Museum, that dizzyingly transfixed passersby with roiling images of ocean waves threatening to flood the adjacent fields and highway with their pixelated energy. Often immersing himself in nature, Ross has radically advanced both video and printing methods to capture his subject matter both in great detail and abstractly.

The work of both artists has been the subject of dozens of exhibitions and acquisitions by major museums and private collections in the US and internationally.
