Mind & Matter: The Influences of Teacher & Collaborator

Mind & Matter: The Influences of Teacher & Collaborator

$120.00

The generosity of creative spirit that flows from mentors and collaborators to both fledgling and established artists fuels development and innovation, resulting in some of the most inspired moments in art:

  • First Stop:  Veteran quasi-abstract painter and teacher Carrie Moyer, to whom the Whitney Museum devoted an entire gallery in its 2017 Biennial, will share with us her most recent solo exhibition at Chelsea’s DCMoore Gallery.  A professor in the Art and Art History Department and Director of the Graduate Program at Hunter College, and Vice Chair of the Board of Governors at the storied Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Moyer paints large, bold canvases that inventively reference Color Field, Pop Art and 1970s Feminist art and speak to both art history and the current moment.  Together we will learn why Art in America has asserted that her "distinctive ability to combine visual snap...with an omnivorous intellectual and visual curiosity...has made her an influential figure among younger critically minded painters." (Art in America, 2016)

  • Next Up: The ultimate collaborative influence, legendary print workshop Gemini G.E.L. has been at the forefront of printmaking for over fifty years, partnering with scores of artists -- from Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns to David Hockney and Julie Mehretu -- inventively broadening the scope of contemporary printmaking and multiples.   In his twelfth year at Gemini's Chelsea outpost, Director Chris Santa Maria will regale us with the workshop's storied LA origins and impactful art-world history, and demonstrate a variety of printmaking methods used by Gemini's master printers, with extraordinary samples on view.
