Katherine Bradford

• “I want to examine large themes that exist in any time or place -- themes like isolation, community, play, or wonder,” states Katherine Bradford -- making a visit to this veteran painter’s Greenpoint studio an ideal stop for this EdelHaus season.  With a solo exhibition currently on view at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, several other recent solo shows, and inclusion in multiple group exhibitions of today’s artists-to-watch, Bradford’s decades-long practice has recently earned her the spotlight of the contemporary art world. The New York native, who divides her time between Maine and Brooklyn, creates instantly recognizable work featuring radiantly lit, faux-naif images that frequently hover between the underworld and outer space, and whose vibrant hues often belie deeper or darker intentions.  Bradford is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, and Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Her work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Portland Museum of Art. She is on the Graduate MFA faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, teaches at FIT, and is Senior Critic for the MFA Painting program at the Yale School of Art.

Jon Kessler

• We will hop just next door and enter the wildly imaginative, innovative world of Jon Kessler, whose kinetic sculptures and installations simultaneously invoke and mock our technologically dependent world. Widely acclaimed for his recent duo of work in the Whitney’s 2017 Biennial, Kessler is a seasoned craftsman and teacher, on faculty at Columbia University’s School of Visual Arts since 1994, with work in too many major museums and collections to innumerate, but including MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Israel Museum, Broad Collection, and many, many more. His work has been shown in scores of solo and group exhibitions since 1983, and the broad-ranging, often fearless practices of many of today’s celebrated artists pay homage to Kessler’s inventive creativity and generous tutelage.
