The New York Studio School & James Castle
- Meet us in Greenwich Village at the iconic New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture for a tour of this historic site, housed since 1965 in the original location of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Share with us the school’s deep New York history and its impact throughout the larger arts community; and meet Graham Nickson, Dean of the School since 1988 and master figurative painter, whose highly lauded work is in major private and public collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, The National Gallery of Art, and Neuberger Museum.
- We will then spend time with art critic, and art historian Karen Wilkin, who has curated the compelling exhibition James Castle: People, Places and Things especially for the Studio School’s historic Gallery space. Wilkin, who expertly engaged us last year at The Frankenthaler Foundation, will expound upon Castle’s life and his seventy-year career of quiet creativity in small-town Idaho, which left a disproportionate impact upon the art world outside his limited environment.
