Sharpe-Walentas Studios:

  • Each year 17 visual artists are chosen by a jury comprised of seasoned artists and art professionals and awarded a yearlong residence by the Sharp-Walentas Studio Program in this rent-free, non-residential studio overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. Members of the program’s Arts Advisory Committee, committed to the merit-based selection of artists by artists since its founding in 1991, include founding member Chuck Close and newer members such as painter Deborah Kass.
  • Led by 2017 recipient and painter Doron Langberg, we will visit a number of his fellow award recipients in their studio settings, view their work and hear about their personal journeys. Langberg, an award-winning graduate of Yale’s MFA program and previous recipient of a Yaddo residency, is represented by 1969 Gallery on the Lower East Side. His own work addresses issues of gender, sexuality and identity through a normative lens of friends and family in highly tactile and sensuous oil paintings. While viewing the figurative tradition through a prism of art historical references, Langberg uses his own powerful imagery and unusual palette to convey a broad range of emotions and fundamental human experiences.
  • In the same building, we will be joined by and visit the studio of seasoned painter Alexi Worth, who will share the figurative elements of his own practice, which employs graphic qualities to convey psychological spaces. Worth, represented by Chelsea’s DC Moore Gallery, has received Guggenheim Foundation, Tiffany Foundation, and other awards; has followed a parallel, robust career as an art critic and writer, with a broad span of catalog essays and critical commentary in magazines such as The New Yorker, ARTnews, Slate, and Art in America; and has taught at both the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. His keen eye and art historical knowledge will add valuable narrative to our excursion.
